Scott Hamilton

In 2019, Stars on Ice presented U.S. Figure Skating Greats – Past, Present, and Future.

“The greatest ice show on earth started with such a simple notion. Back in 1986, we wanted to create a show that was all about skating. We believed our fans would appreciate sophisticated skating, cutting-edge costumes and challenging choreography. After 30 years, I am honored by the success of our simple notion. Stars on Ice exists to entertain you. But it has also given me the incredible opportunity to do the work I love and am proud of. For that, I humbly thank you.”

– Scott Hamilton

A Brief Overview

In 1986, Olympic champion Scott Hamilton and his manager, Robert D. Kain of IMG, conceived the idea for Stars on Ice - after Hamilton's contract with Ice Capades was not renewed.

A few months later, Hamilton opened his America Tour in five cities and this became the prototype for future Stars on Ice shows. The format incorporated both group and solo numbers with the assistance of lighting designers, sound engineers and choreographers. The original cast included Hamilton (who also served as co-producer), Toller Cranston and Rosalynn Sumners.

Later that same year, Kain first suggested the name Stars on Ice. Such notable guest stars as Dorothy Hamill and Robin Cousins joined the company of skaters for several shows which eventually expanded to 30 cities. Over the years, Stars on Ice has been an appropriate title with such co-headliners as Jo Jo Starbuck & Ken Shelley, Brian Orser, Kurt Browning, Paul Wylie, Jayne Torvill & Christopher Dean, Kristi Yamaguchi, Ekaterina Gordeeva & Sergei Grinkov, Tara Lipinski, Katarina Witt, Ilia Kulik, Jamie Sale & David Pelletier, Elena Berezhnaya & Anton Sikharulidze, Alexei Yagudin, Sarah Hughes, Evan Lysacek and Xue Shen & Hongbo Zhao among the performers. The Tour played its 1000th U.S. performance in March, 2008 in Philadelphia, and regularly tours in Canada, Japan, China, Korea, and Europe.

Stars on Ice continues to be unique among ice shows, not only with its high profile of skating's most prominent stars, but a level of production second to none. The tour has won four Emmy Awards for Stars on Ice in Choreography and Costume Design. The production also won an ACE Cable Award for the Best Sports Special.

All over the world, Stars on Ice continues to prove itself as the world's premier ice show by offering the very best in championship skating. Each season, Stars on Ice strives to bring a unique skating, musical, and visual experience to each and every audience.

Stars on Ice 2012 Tour
For a quarter-century, Stars on Ice has been the premier figure skating tour, a show filled with fun and surprises. This week, we're going to take you back not very far, to 2010, with some thoughts from Vancouver Olympic Gold Medalist Evan Lysacek about what makes Stars special.

EVAN LYSACEK: “There are ideas floating around about how to change the dynamic of Stars, but to me, I am a purist in a lot of ways. I like, as much as the jumps and choreography and styles, the premise of the show, which has stayed true to itself and to what it is: a show highlighting champions and stars of a sport. We all have really owned this sport at one time or another: Scott (Hamilton), Kurt, Katia (Gordeeva), Joannie (Rochette). We all did. We all have controlled a portion of the sport and to put it all together and really highlight us as champion athletes, not as celebrities or headline-grabbers, is really special.”

Stars on Ice 2009 Tour
For a quarter-century, Stars on Ice has been the premier figure skating tour, a show filled with fun and surprises. This week, we're going to take you back a little bit, to 2009, as Olympic Silver Medalist Sasha Cohen describes what has made Stars such an important part of her life - and such a big part of fans' lives.

SASHA COHEN: “Stars on Ice is more about a family and showing the dynamic between a smaller group of skaters and showing different sides of ourselves to the audience and to our fans. And it offers us a chance to truly be performers. Its impact has been huge and basically it is the only show professionally that is going through the United States. That means it gives kids all over a chance to come watch their favorite skaters and dream about Stars on Ice.

“It is the only thing we have that has lasted and to be able to do it in the best way possible is special for us. I was one of the lucky 11 skaters to be on the tour that year and to have the wonderful opportunity to bring everything we created to the audiences across the country.”

2008 Live and In Color Tour
For a quarter-century, Stars on Ice has been the premier figure skating tour, a show filled with fun and surprises. This week, we're going to take you back a few years to 2008, and Todd Eldredge's favorite performance.

TODD ELDREDGE: “It was to Always Look on the Bright Side of Life from Monty Python. I worked with my coach Richard Callaghan on all the steps, and once I arrived in Lake Placid, I finished ironing out all the details of some of the gags with Tour Director Jef Billings. I have to say this program was so much fun to perform every night because there were so many different elements to the number and a number of things that could, and a lot of times did, go wrong.

“There was a bucket of water that I had to skate under and hope I didn't get doused with water. Luckily, I only got a little wet a couple of times and never got the whole bucket on my head. I also had a pair of breakaway pants that I only had 2 seconds, when the lights shut off due to a fallen light from the lighting truss, to make sure they successfully broke away for the final joke of the number. There were a few times the Velcro on the pants wouldn't separate when the lights shut off, and when the lights came back on I was struggling to pull them down. A little embarrassing to say the least, but that was the nature of the number, so it still kind of worked and made people laugh anyway.”

2007 Double Exposure Tour

For a quarter-century, Stars on Ice has been the premier figure skating tour, a show filled with fun and surprises. This week, we're going to take you back to 2007, when husband and wife Jason Dungjen and Yuka Sato performed a duet. It's hardly been unusual for married pair skaters to do so on the tour - think Ekaterina Gordeeva & Sergei Grinkov or Jamie Salé & David Pelletier - but Dungjen and Sato never skated together as an eligible competitive pair.

YUKA SATO: “The song Get Here by Olitta Adams, this is the number that I performed with my husband and skating partner Jason. My biggest dream as a child was to become a pair skater. Also being lifted up high ... it's a fantastic view up there.

“It was just a joy to share the ice with Jason on this number. It was the first time Jason and I performed together in Stars on Ice. We had not competed at the Olympics or Worlds because I had already lost my eligibility to compete before we were together. It was wonderful to do it on Stars on Ice.”

2006 The Show About the Show Tour
For a quarter-century, Stars on Ice has been the premier figure skating tour, a show filled with fun and surprises. This week, we're going to take you back to 2006 as we give everyone a case of ``Vertigo,'' as seen through the eyes of Kyoko Ina, who performed to that piece of music with pair partner John Zimmerman.

KYOKO INA: “My favorite number to perform to for Star on Ice was to U2's Vertigo. It was high-paced, and fully-loaded with all kinds of tricks. John and I have always had a lot of input into the numbers we skate to. We always plan the trick and work with the choreographer to try to come up with something different that the fans have not seen from us, and that was very different from prior numbers.”

2005 Imagination Tour
For a quarter-century, Stars on Ice has been the premier figure skating tour, a show filled with fun and surprises. This week, we're going to take you back to 2005, when the Who's Who of a cast put together a memorable group number to The Who, as Todd Eldredge vividly recalls.

TODD ELDREDGE: “In my opinion, this was the greatest routine because of all the different elements to the number. First of all, I love the music of The Who. Throughout the number, we had umbrellas that we skated with, both open and closed; there was a sprinkler system throughout the lighting truss that simulated rain; and John and Kyoko had breakaway costumes that we had to remove from them before they did their final lift in the middle of the ice under the falling rain. Visually and choreographically, this was the most creative routine I can remember.”

2004 TIME - A Theatrical Adventure
For a quarter-century, Stars on Ice has been the premier figure skating tour, a show filled with fun and surprises. This week, we're going to take you back to 2004, when special guest appearances (see below) complemented a stellar cast. Co-producer Byron Allen talks about the infusion of such magnificent talent, and the star-making history of the tour.

BYRON ALLEN: “Certainly Stars on Ice has made people better performers and helped turn them into the biggest stars through the years. And there's a loyalty among the skaters.

“From a skater perspective, Stars has been a vehicle to continue a career and, right now, it's about the only vehicle. Stars on Ice is the place where skaters have a chance to further their career once they have reached the pinnacle. They recognize that and they are eager to remain a part of it.

“It was wonderful to have that much talent at the same time.''

2003 Stars on Ice Tour
For a quarter-century, Stars on Ice has been the premier figure skating tour, a show filled with fun and surprises. This week, we're going to take you back to 2003, when Salt Lake City Gold Medalists Alexei Yagudin, Jamie Salé and David Pelletier, and Elena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze joined the tour. Jamie and David recall how different the professional world was from competitive skating.

DAVID PELLETIER: “We're lucky enough to have had a tour to join that was allowing us to be creative, to put together two programs and then group numbers where we would share ideas and play around for hours to do the best possible number. The chance to have a tour like that, yes, it is a great opportunity to improve. Jamie and I are so much better skaters than when we competed, in so many ways: the way we skate and the way we relate to each other and to the audience.”

JAMIE SALÉ: “We always have had a family feel to our show, and that is why the show is successful and stays on the road. We have loyal fans who come out year after year and are excited to see the show. It's not a typical exhibition skate, with one or two programs. There's a production element to the show that we all take such great pride in. We all want to know each year, `What is the theme and group number?' We are excited to learn. The audience loves that and we love that . Everyone will have their favorite skaters, some years they feel some skaters are better than others, and they know there is always something special to each performance.”

2002 Stars on Ice Tour
For a quarter-century, Stars on Ice has been the premier figure skating tour, a show filled with fun and surprises. This week, we're going to take you back to 2002, when Kristi Yamaguchi finished off a decade of headlining the tour, accompanied by fellow Olympic Gold Medalists Katarina Witt, Tara Lipinski and Ilia Kulik. The last routine Kristi did was to ``Someday I'll Fly Away,'' accompanied by Denis Petrov.

KRISTI YAMAGUCHI: “It was definitely work, but I think at the same time I wouldn't have wanted to do any other thing. Since I was a little girl, I dreamed of being on a tour and going around the world, and had a dream come true. For 10 years, I was living that dream. First, I skated competitively and then was able to do something I love as a living until I felt it was time to move to other things in 2002.

“The group of skaters had so much integrity and pride in what they produced and presented every year. I think it was instilled in me as well. We took pride in pushing ourselves and working hard and coming up with innovative things every year.

“That year, we did G-O-L-D. We had these four Olympic gold medals among these three women, so we thought, `Let's play that up a little bit.' I think it was neat to kind of create a sisterhood, fun to kind of be able to bond in that type of way in a performance.”

For a quarter-century, Stars on Ice has been the premier figure skating tour, a show filled with fun and surprises. This week, we're going to take you back to 2001 and a favorite performance by a fellow cast member, as recalled by 1994 World Champion Yuka Sato. And it was not a routine by Scott Hamilton, although this was billed as the Stars on Ice founder's final tour.

YUKA SATO: “The name of the program was `Nyah,'' skated to by Kurt Browning. This number shows passion, power and beauty that is everything that figure skating can offer. Yet Kurt is so smooth and fluid, you sometimes forget he has skates on. Amazing!”

For a quarter-century, Stars on Ice has been the premier figure skating tour, a show filled with fun and surprises. This week, we're going to take you back to the turn of the century, to the year 2000, with some thoughts from Kurt Browning and Tanith Belbin on a memorable character.

KURT BROWNING: “That was the year I did the clown number, Ragidon. My character allowed me so much freedom to explore along with the audience. He also was allowed to roam out with the audience with his clown shoes on and he also spoke, in “clowneesh,” often and as loud as he wanted. True Fun.”

TANITH BELBIN: “When I remember seeing some of my favorite programs of all-time, Kurt's clown is always one of them. It was so funny and it so involved the audience and the other skaters. Just a wonderful program. It made me think, `This is the kind of skating that brought me into figure skating in the first place.’”

1999 Stars on Ice Tour
For a quarter-century, Stars on Ice has been the premier figure skating tour, a show filled with fun and surprises. This week, we're going to take you back to 1999, the last year of the 20th century and the final year on tour for a Stars original, Rosalynn Sumners.

ROSALYNN SUMNERS: “The first five cities when Stars on Ice began, we were in college hockey arenas, and we were saying, `Oh my gosh, somebody wants to watch us skate.' We were just happy to be in a hockey arena; we didn't care if we were riding on yellow school buses to get there. There was a lot more “schlepping” in those days ... but I was doing what I loved since I was 7.

“As it kept going along, each year got bigger and better and more thrilling - and more baffling that I could be a part of something this amazing. I started when I was 22. Really, it was 25 years ago. Oh my gosh!”

1998 Stars on Ice Tour
For a quarter-century, Stars on Ice has been the premier figure skating tour, a show filled with fun and surprises. This week, we're going to take you back to 1998, with some thoughts from tour founder Scott Hamilton about that special year.

SCOTT HAMILTON: "We were at Madison Square Garden in March and at the end of the show, the guys didn't leave the ice. Kristi took the microphone and said, `Tonight we have something different, a very special presentation.' And then Bobby Goldwater from the Garden came out and said they were inducting a figure skater into the Walk of Fame for the first time.

"Bobby presented me with the plaque and I turned to the others and wagged a finger at them, you know: `There are no secrets in this cast.' I was totally at a loss.

"This sheet of ice has given me so many incredible moments, and this is another. To see a show I started 12 years ago be filled to the rafters is the best."

1997 Stars on Ice Tour
For a quarter-century, Stars on Ice has been the premier figure skating tour, a show filled with fun and surprises. This week, we're going to take you back to 1997, the year that Ekaterina Gordeeva returned to the tour after her husband, Sergei Grinkov's, death in November 1995.

EKATERINA GORDEEVA: “I think Stars on Ice is family. That is because, being a part of Stars on Ice for so many years, we got comfortable together, got to know each other so well, like in a family. It was very important when this thing happened with Sergei.

“I am very blessed I got to know these people. And because of Stars on Ice, I found my new husband; I met Ilia (Kulik) on the tour.”

1996 Stars on Ice Tour
For a quarter-century, Stars on Ice has been the premier figure skating tour, a show filled with fun and surprises. This week, we're going to take you back to 1996, a year marked by tragedy, and the strength shown by Ekaterina Gordeeva and the rest of her Stars family after her husband, Sergei Grinkov, died of a massive heart attack during pre-tour rehearsals.

EKATERINA GORDEEVA: ``It happened in front of everyone during rehearsal in Lake Placid, and everyone saw it and felt it, and I even felt terrible because I think everyone felt the same way. Everyone was on the ice and all of a sudden this thing happened. I did get a lot of support, but felt terrible that everyone went through the pain, this sudden and terrible pain.

“I am very thankful for them and their support to me and for the dedication to us. And for what they did for Sergei - every day on the show they did a small pause for Sergei. It was right during a number and that was very special.''

1995 Stars on Ice Tour
For a quarter-century, Stars on Ice has been the premier figure skating tour, a show filled with fun and surprises. This week, we're going to take you back to 1995, with some thoughts from Kristi Yamaguchi and Paul Wylie about two dramatic performances to “Schindler's List.”

KRISTI YAMAGUCHI: “Paul and Katarina both skated to `Schindler's List' and Katarina was so expressive and such a beautiful performer on the ice. And remember that she had come from East Germany, so Katarina felt a deeply personal connection to this piece.”

PAUL WYLIE: “It seemed every year there was this sort of concept number I would do in the first half. Between me and the audience, we both kind of were wondering what would be the one for next year. Mary Scotvold, my choreographer, and all of us spent a lot of time thinking about what is the next one. My shtick wasn't the Frank Sinatra crooner material, or point-at-the-audience and shake-your-hip kind of thing. I was kind of telling a story. Because I had these genius people working with me, it enabled me to reach a different level with that performance.”

1994 Stars on Ice Tour
For a quarter-century, Stars on Ice has been the premier figure skating tour, a show filled with fun and surprises. This week, we're going to take you back to 1994, with some thoughts from tour founder Scott Hamilton about that year's special tribute to the 1984 Sarajevo Olympics where Scott won his gold medal.

SCOTT HAMILTON: “The people of Sarajevo meant so much to us and did so much for us that we wanted to do something to remember that time in our lives. There were five of us (Scott, Rosalynn Sumners, Brian Orser, Kitty and Peter Carruthers) who competed there, and who understood what happened afterward there. Sandra (Bezic) knew just what we were looking to do. We each wore a different color from the (Olympic) flag. She took it to another 12 levels with her point of view and artistic sense and taste.''

1993 Stars on Ice Tour
For a quarter-century, Stars on Ice has been the premier figure skating tour, a show filled with fun and surprises. This week, we're going to take you back to 1993, when the cast staged what many consider the top group number, as recalled by Paul Wylie and Doug Ladret.

PAUL WYLIE: “We did a group number to (the band) Queen my first year. It was a combination of really fashion-forward costumes and great music and choreography. It was so much more than anything you would see in an exhibition, which had been the typical show for Olympic-level skating. Stars on Ice kind of dared more to present a part of a story, a common theme.”

DOUG LADRET: “Number 1 all-time, and as a skater being in it, was doing Queen. This was epic and it included all of the cast members throughout the closing production numbers, which was 10 - 15 minutes long. There was a lot of input from us in what tricks we would do and the movements in and out of those elements.”
